Pizza slice and wavy hair on a calf

Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a stylised female figure with a slice of pepperoni pizza in place of the face, topped by voluminous dark brown wavy hair and a teal bow or earring below. Bold black outlines define the hair strands and pizza, with flat red, yellow and brown fills and soft shading on the skin tones. The design is centred on the lower leg and fills most of the frame against a dark background.

The night the wind tore the sign off the Bellini Brothers' takeaway, Dolores Finch was halfway through the Thursday dough and refused to stop kneading for a bit of weather. Her hair stood up in a dark wave, combed back and held with three tins of lacquer, and she swore it kept the heat in the oven better than any brick. Her brothers-in-law called it nonsense. Her customers said nothing, because they were busy eating.

At eleven the power dipped and the back door banged open on a man in a wet overcoat. He said his name was Mr Sorrento and that he had come about the pepperoni. Nobody in Hull had ordered pepperoni from a Sorrento in forty years. He wanted the recipe, and he offered a teal velvet bow from some dance hall long since shut in exchange. Dolores laughed at him, then stopped, because the bow was warm in his palm as if it had been sitting by a fire.

She cut him a slice anyway. While he ate it standing up, the hair above her ears began to lift in the draught like smoke off a chimney. Mr Sorrento's face went as pale as unproved dough. "You've been wearing my bow," he said. "Every Thursday, you took it off the hook in the back room and tied it on." Dolores reached for the knot at her nape and found only her own hair, heavy and warm.

By morning the sign was back up, the ovens were still hot, and the bow hung on its hook again. Dolores still sells pepperoni slices from the front window, and she tells anyone who asks that the trick is to never let the dough rest in the wind.
