Crowned queen in a gold frame on a calf
Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo
A crowned female figure with dark eyeshadow and red lips looks out from a blue hooded cowl. She sits within an ornate gold scrollwork frame topped with small blue gems, against a black and red background. Bold black outlines, smooth shading and saturated gold, blue and red ink give the piece a classic, illustrative look.

You have been grinding lapis for three days, and the blue has worked into the creases of your knuckles so that the baker's boy asks whether you drowned in the pot. The steward wants the frame finished before the feast of the new moon: gold leaf laid so thin it breathes, scrolls curling like smoke from a lamp, and at the crown a cluster of blue stones no larger than barley grains. When you ask what the glass is for, he says the queen wishes to see herself as she truly is, and that you are paid to polish, not to wonder.

The queen comes to your workshop at dusk, her hood drawn over her hair and her lips painted the red of pomegranate pith. She does not look at the frame. She looks at you, then lifts the mirror to her own face for a long moment, the way a thief tests a lock. "Tell me the truth about the glass," she says. You tell her the silver was cut from the river town's tithe, and that the backing was sealed with honey and ash, as your master taught you, so the reflection holds even when the lamp is low.
She smiles, which is worse than a frown. "Then you know what it shows." She speaks of her sister, once the only face in the palace anyone bothered to praise, and of the year the river rose and took the granary and the sister's dowry with it. Her voice does not shake. You notice the blue stones are warm in your palm.
When she has gone, you turn the frame over and find, scratched into the gold where no one would think to look, a line in your master's hand: the glass shows only who is watching. Footsteps sound on the stair. You set the mirror face up on the table and go to the door to bow. Behind you, in the dark silver, something with a crown lifts its head to see who has come in, and when you raise the lamp, the reflection does not raise it with you.
