Colour tattoo of a pizza slice with dripping cheese and pepperoni, with script words whatever and forever, in a traditional style on skin.

Pizza slice tattoo with whatever forever script

Traditional · Mixed · Photo

A slice of pizza with dripping cheese, red pepperoni and a crust outlined in bold black linework fills the centre of the tattoo. The script words whatever above and forever below are set in black lettering that follows the curve of the design. Flat red, orange and brown fills sit on pale skin against a plain background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had buried the lane to the Crown Inn by four o'clock, so the pizza I'd been carrying up from Hebden never reached Mrs Halloran's farm. Bev, the landlady, took one look at the box, one look at my face, and told me I might as well eat it before the cheese set into a slab.

We ate it at the bar with the fire banked and the wind rattling the sign outside. Bev's daughter Nell was home from Leeds with nothing to do but tease me. She pulled a biro from behind her ear and wrote across the grease-spotted lid in looping capitals, WHATEVER, then tapped the pen against the cardboard. "And forever," she said, "because you'll be back to finish the job." I told her that was the kind of promise a person made when the power was out and the drink was free.

The lights went at nine. Bev lit candles in jam jars and the oven ticked as it cooled, and Nell cut the last slice into two uneven halves, the strings of cheese stretching between us like something we'd both agreed not to break. I asked her which word she'd meant, the one on top or the one underneath. She shrugged and said the top one was for the years she'd spent waiting for the bus, and the bottom was for the ones she planned to spend after.

In the morning the plough scraped past the window and the road ran grey and clear. I left the box on the bar with the lid still open, my thumbprint smudged across the second word, and I didn't leave for another hour, though I'd told myself I would.
