Planchette and hands across the chest

Neo-trad · Chest · Mixed · Photo

A heart-shaped planchette with a crescent moon and two teal gemstones sits centrally on the chest, with a bow and ribbon hanging beneath it. Hands reach in from either side and strands of beads drape down in curves. Grey shading gives the hands and fabric depth, while teal and blue accents add colour to the gems and ribbons.

Mrs Abernethy insisted we sit with the lamp turned down to a bead of light, so the planchette could be seen to glide rather than be pushed. Eight of us sat at the walnut table in Lewes, fingertips barely resting on the heart-shaped board, the two teal stones catching the flame each time it wobbled toward the letters. Somebody's chain of jet beads clicked against the table edge like a slow clock.

It spelled EDITH within a minute. My sister had been dead since March, and the board knew her name, or said it did, and the old women gasped as if they had been waiting all winter for permission. Ada wept without making a sound. I kept my hand light, as instructed, and felt the small pull of the board toward her side of the table, steady as a tide.

Then it stopped. The crescent moon at the top seemed to lean toward me. Slowly, letter by letter, it spelled ASK ADA WHERE THE GREEN RIBBON IS. Nobody breathed. Ada's face drained the colour of paper. Under the table her knee had been shaking against mine for the last hour, and I thought of the bow Edith wore every Sunday, folded now inside Ada's sewing box where no one had looked since the funeral.

I did not ask. I lifted my hands, and the planchette stayed where it was, its eyes dull as pebbles. Next morning I found the ribbon knotted round the bedpost in our room, and Ada gone on the early train with her trunk. I have kept the board in the drawer, face down. Some nights I hear the beads sliding across the wood, and I do not go down to see who is still sitting there.
