Planet and constellation on upper arm

Geometric · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A shaded grey planet with red cracked markings sits on the inner upper arm, overlapped by a red lattice of interlocking triangles that extends to the left and right. A fine black line links a cluster of small dots and joins them to the planet, forming a constellation-like pattern. The black linework is crisp and the planet is shaded with grey tones, while the red elements provide the only colour against a plain light background.

Sit closer, and mind the stove, it's hungrier than the dog. You want to know why the moon sits so low over Hob's Field this time of year? It came down in the frost of the winter the beck froze to the bottom, and it landed on the turnip clamp like a dropped pan lid.

Farmer Tull found it at first light, grey as cold porridge and cracked all over with red seams, the colour of rust on the plough. He wanted it shifted by noon, so he sent for the horses, but they stood snorting with their breath smoking and would not let it near their harness. So his wife Mabel fetched her knitting bag and a spool of red wool, and she went round the moon three times, driving the nails from the byre door into the frozen ground.

Every nail became a star, and she tied them together with a black thread so the moon would know where it belonged. Then she laced the red wool over and under, round and round, until the cracks held shut and the whole thing made a lattice of little triangles across the field, tight enough that a mouse couldn't have crept through. By dusk the moon hung steady above the stubble, and it has hung there ever since, held by Mabel's knots.

Look at the window now, at the frost on the glass. See those red threads? That's her wool, still knotted, and the nails are still up there if you know where to count. Go on, get to bed before your mam finds the fire's gone out.
