Five black geometric band designs
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
Five vertical strips of repeating black geometric motifs sit side by side on a white background. The patterns include interlocking diamonds, rows of upward triangles and zigzag chevrons, all drawn with solid black shapes and clean edges. The strips are evenly spaced and of similar width, giving a balanced, graphic composition.

Nell Harrower wove by the canal window in Saltgate, where the lamplighters came round at dusk and the gulls went quiet by midnight. The harbour master had ordered five bands of black on undyed linen, one for each of the five bridges that carried the night carts over the Sill, and he wanted them finished by the turn of the tide.

She worked the shuttle until her knuckles cracked. The first band she made was all diamonds, each one nested inside the next like links in a chain, because the first bridge was the oldest and needed holding. The second was chevrons, pointed like the roofs along Tallow Lane, so the carts would feel the slope and slow down. The third was rows of upward triangles, and when she set the bobbin down the whole room seemed to lean the same way.
On the fourth night a boy came in off the water with wet feet and asked what the bands were for. She told him the bridges would forget their own names if nobody wrote them down. He laughed and said bridges could not forget anything. She threaded the fifth band, a zigzag like a stitched seam, and pulled it tight. "Then they will not need to remember," she said. "They only need to be shown."
At the turn of the tide she carried the five strips out along the quay and laid them across the rails. By morning the carts crossed without a shout, and the water under the Sill ran low and quiet, as though something had been counted and found correct.
