The image shows fifteen heart designs arranged in four rows on a plain white background. The customs man at Hollin Bridge unfolded the cloth on his table and counted the hearts twice, the way his grandmother had taught him to count eggs. There were fifteen of them, stitched in black thread on white linen. One was ringed with spirals like rolled bread. One was pricked all over with dots, like rain on a window. One was a solid coal-black shape, and one had paisley drops hanging from its point like tears that had dried before they fell.

"A sampler is taxed by the heart," he said, "and you have fifteen."

Ilse said her mother had sewn them the winter before the flood took the lower village, and that each heart was a house she would not see again. She did not say it to move him. She said it because the thread was tired and she wanted someone to hear it. He looked a long time at the open heart in the middle of the second row, the one with a single flower pressed into its centre, and then he asked her which was hers.

She pointed to the flower. He nodded as though that settled a debt, then took a needle from the drawer and a spool of grey wool from his own coat. He told her there was no duty on patterns, only on people who carried them across unsaid, and so she would have to sew one heart onto his lapel before she passed. She chose the dotted one. It took her the length of the queue.

On the far bank the linen felt lighter in her hands. When she looked back, the customs house was dark and the man was standing at its door with his coat open, touching the small pricked heart over his chest as if it had always been there and he had only now noticed it.
