PlayStation button symbols in ink splatter on forearm

Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A forearm tattoo showing the four PlayStation button symbols (triangle, circle, cross and square) as skin-coloured knockouts within a dense black ink splatter. The solid black fills and splattered edges are crisp, with fine dots scattered across the surrounding skin. The piece is entirely black ink on a light skin tone against a dark, blurred brick background.

The winding wheel had stopped in March, but its clank still lived in Owen's head like a loose tooth, so when his cousin Nia pushed a grey console and a tangle of wires across the kitchen table, he carried it up to the old lamp room and wired it to the telly that ran off a car battery. Nobody else in Ashgrove had power that didn't come from the grid, but the lamp room had its own cable and nobody had asked for it back.

The controller had four buttons on its right side, each marked with a shape. Owen named them by what he could see from the hill. The triangle was the spoil heap above the rows, a black cone that had never once been cleared. The circle was the wheel itself, the pulley that had taken men down and brought them up for ninety years. The cross was the gantry at the pithead, two thin bars that stood against the sky. The square was the door of the lamp room, where the lamps were hung and the tallies were kept.

His dad came in at six with his boots in one hand and dust in every crease of his face. He stood behind the chair without speaking, then held out his palm, the lines of it still grey with coal that no amount of soap would shift. Owen handed him the controller. His dad pressed the cross and the little figure on the screen leapt over something, and he laughed once, short, the way he did at the club.
