The watch comes across the counter wrapped in an oilskin scrap, and you know before you unfold it that the glass has been cracked for years. Your father used to say the sea gets into a case and waits. Ada Penrose sets it down beside her cold tea and asks whether it can still tell the hour, as if the question were a small one.

You ease the back open with the thin blade. Inside, the movement is furred with salt, and the hands have stopped at twenty to four. Tucked behind the dial is a folded slip of paper, the ink run blue, with a column of dates in a hand you don't recognise: 1891, 1907, 1909, climbing the margin like a tide mark. You check them against the harbour calendar pinned by the door, the one with the lighthouse on it, and none of them matches anything you can name.

Ada says her husband wound it every Sunday for forty years and never once let it run down. You clean the pivots, fit a new mainspring, and in the quiet of the shop you can hear water slapping against the slip below the window. The hands catch, then sweep, and the balance wheel settles into its rhythm like a boat finding its mooring.

When she leaves, you give her the watch and keep the paper. You pin it to the board beside the lighthouse calendar, and under the dates you write the only one you are sure of, today, the morning the hands started moving again.
