Pocket watch and roses on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A pocket watch with Roman numerals sits above two large roses, one partly in shadow at the top and one rendered in soft greys in the centre. A small rose and a key appear near the bottom of the design. The shading is smooth and tonal, with strong highlights and dark background areas that give the roses depth and the sleeve a full, layered look.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Maud Harrowgate had kept the lost property office at Caldbeck Junction for thirty-one years, and in all that time nobody had come back for the pocket watch. It sat on the top shelf behind the tea caddy, its silver lid dented where a porter had dropped it in 1974, its hands stopped at eleven minutes past four. Men came in every week asking after umbrellas and gloves. Nobody asked after watches.

On a wet Tuesday in March a young woman came in with a folded letter and asked whether anyone had handed in a key. Not a door key, she said, a small brass one, the sort that belongs to a writing desk or a case. Maud looked at her over her spectacles for a long moment. Then she reached under the counter for the envelope marked with a rose in biro and tipped out a key with a worn bow and a stem no longer than a finger.

The woman's hands shook as she held it. Her grandfather had walked the line from Caldbeck to Harrowby every morning for forty years, she explained, and he had lost the key the week before he died. Maud said nothing about the letters that had gone astray. She opened the top drawer, lifted out the watch and set it on the counter between them, then fitted the key to the little winding stem on its back. It turned with a stiff click.

The second hand began to move. The woman made a sound that was half a laugh and half something else, and cupped the watch in both palms as though it might escape. Outside, the 4.12 pulled out of platform two, late as always. For once nobody on the concourse looked up at the station clock to check it, and Maud let the drawer stay open a while longer than she needed to.
