Pocket watch and rose on the thigh

Realism · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A pocket watch with a hanging key is tattooed on the upper thigh, with its face and case shaded in black and grey. Below and to the right, a red rose with green leaves sits on a banner with partly visible lettering. The linework is clean and the shading gives the watch depth, while the rose uses bold solid colour. The subject is cropped at the thigh, with a striped garment above and a red trainer below.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lamp at Scarrow Head had to be wound every four hours, and for thirty-one years only my father knew the rhythm of it. The clockwork turned the great lens so that ships saw a flash rather than a steady glow, and the key that started it hung from his pocket watch on a short brass chain. The winter his hands began to shake, he pressed the watch into my palm on the stairs and told me not to lose it.

I was nineteen and certain I knew everything about the sea, which is a foolish thing to be certain of on an island with one boat and a supply ship that came only when the weather allowed. Mother had left for the mainland the spring before, with a red rose pressed flat inside the logbook as a kind of apology. I read it each night beside the wick trimmings, the ink gone brown, and I wound the clock at midnight, four and eight, counting the ticks as though they might run out.

On the last night of October the wind came round to the north and the watch stopped at ten past two. I shook it, cursed it, and then remembered Father's old trick, which was to press the key harder than seemed sensible. The mechanism caught with a groan. Far out, a small light was bobbing in the swell, and when the beam swept over it I saw the Marigold's sail come down and a lantern swing back at me, once, twice, the way he had taught me.

In the morning the Marigold came round the point with Father in the wheelhouse, and I saw him lift a hand to the lamp still turning above me. He didn't ask how I'd managed. He only nodded at the watch in my fist, as though I had finally been handed the rest of the job.
