Colour tattoo of two blue birds on a branch with yellow, red and orange flowers and the words every little thing will be alright, in script on the inner forearm.

Blue birds, flowers and script quote on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Two small blue birds perch on a thin brown branch that curves across the forearm, with clusters of yellow, orange and red flowers and green leaves at the right end. Beneath the branch, black script reads every little thing will be alright, following the curve of the arm. The birds are shaded in soft blue tones, while the linework and lettering are fine and dark, and the colour is concentrated in the birds and flowers.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

By four in the morning the corridor lights have dimmed to the colour of weak tea, and you are the only one still walking it with any purpose. Bed nine has pressed its bell twice since midnight. Mr Okonedo, eighty-one, wants to know whether the blue wool cardigan has been washed. His wife knitted it, two bluebirds on a bough worked into the front, and it is folded on the chair where he can see it. You tell him it is safe. You fold it again, carefully, so the birds face the window.

Along the ward the monitors keep their small, unbothered rhythm. Somebody has taped a card to the nurses' station in child's felt-tip capitals, left by a visitor who has since gone home. Every little thing will be alright. You have read it so many times the words have stopped meaning anything and started meaning that you should drink some water and check the drip on bed six.

At half five the sky over the car park turns the grey of a dishcloth, then slowly lightens. Mr Okonedo is asleep with one hand resting on the wool. You stand in the doorway with the clipboard against your chest and watch his breathing even out, the way it does when someone finally lets the night be nearly over.

Handover is at six. You will tell the day shift about the bell, the cardigan and the water jug, and they will nod, and none of it will reach anyone outside these walls. But you leave the card where it is, because it still belongs on that desk.
