Sit closer, the fire only keeps you warm for the first hour, after that the desert gets into your coat. You want the one about Tobias Vane and the watch? Everybody on this road knows the watch. He carried it from Barstow to the salt flats, a silver case no bigger than a hen's egg, and he never once opened it to check the hour. "Time stops for no one," he'd say, then laugh, because a man who says a thing like that has usually already missed his train.

Thirty miles past the last well his truck gave out beside a mesquite that had been dead since before the war. He sat on the tailgate turning the watch in his fingers, and a woman walked out of the heat carrying red roses wrapped in yesterday's newspaper. Her hat had feathers pinned to the brim, a whole crow's worth, and she said she had been waiting for him since the road was laid.

She offered him a trade. One hour back, any hour he chose, in exchange for the watch. He thought of his mother's kitchen, the radio on the sill, rain drumming the tin roof, and he said yes before he could think better of it. She held the case up to the sun like a jeweller and the glass cracked along the hinge with a sound like a dry twig.

They found him at dawn with the roses on the seat beside him, the stems gone black. The watch lay open in his palm, ticking, and the hands had not moved an inch. He had spent his hour already, they say, though nobody could tell me which one.
