Pocket watch, rose and eye on an arm
Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A pocket watch with Roman numerals and ornate engraved casing sits above a large white rose, with a realistic eye with a teal iris below. The shading is smooth and detailed, with soft grey tones across the petals and metalwork. Two photos of the same arm are shown side by side, with the rose and watch filling most of the frame.

Mr Kessler wound his pocket watch at the bottom of every waltz, the way other men cracked their knuckles, and the Palais let him because nobody on the books could keep a foxtrot to the beat like he could. That Saturday he left his white rose on the cloakroom hatch with the ticket, and I pinned it back to the stub for him while the band tuned up for the last set.

At a quarter to twelve the music dropped between numbers and he came to the hatch looking for the rose. He didn't look at it. He looked past me at the big clock over the bandstand, then down at his own watch, and frowned as if one of them had lied to him. He thumbed the case open, and the hands had stopped at twenty to twelve, though the lid was still ticking with a faint, stubborn heartbeat.
'Hold that for me, Edie,' he said, and pressed it into my palm. 'Just till the last waltz. I've a train to Dover and I'll not miss it for a clock.' I never saw him dance that last waltz. The floor emptied around a girl in a green dress who kept looking at the door, and when I turned back to the hatch the rose was on the counter, dropped and browning at the edges.
I still have the watch. It keeps good time for an hour after I wind it, then drifts a little fast, and I've never managed to correct it. Every Saturday I open the lid, set it by the hall clock, and leave it running on the counter until closing.
