Pocket watch with gears on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows an open pocket watch with visible gears and movement, Roman numerals around the dial, and a fob chain hanging below it. A ribbon or strap curls across the upper left and a bow-like crown sits on the right. Shading is smooth and detailed, with strong highlights and deep shadows giving the metal a three-dimensional look.

Mrs Pargeter had given me the back room over the scullery because the front ones went to the commercial gentlemen, and I was glad of it, for the window looked straight down on the harbour wall where the boats came in grey and low. I had come to Whitby that October with a leather case, a box of files and my late uncle's pocket watch, which had stopped at twenty past four and which I had been too cowardly to open.

The watch lay heavy in my palm that first evening, its cover cold as a coin from the bottom of a well. Inside, the wheels were small and bright, the escapement caught mid-tooth. The Roman numerals ran round the dial in the same careful script that had signed every invoice in his shop on Church Street. The fob chain had snapped at the sixth link and someone had mended it with a bent pin, and I sat on the bed counting links the way he used to count stitches in a waistcoat seam.
On Thursday a fisherman's boy knocked with a bundle of wet paper. Inside was a receipt in my uncle's hand, dated the week before he died: one balance spring, to be collected by the owner of the watch. I pulled the pin free, let the chain fall loose, and went down the back stairs in my slippers to the chandler's on the quay, where a stooped man with a jeweller's glass screwed into one eye took the case from me without a word.
He bent close, turned the little crown, and the wheels began to move. I heard it before I saw it, a dry tick under the gulls, and the second hand crept round past the seven as if it had only been waiting for someone to ask.
