Pomegranate on the back of a hand
Traditional · Hand · Mixed · Photo
A cut pomegranate fills the centre of the back of a hand, showing rows of red seeds outlined in black on a white pith with an orange-brown rind. Dark green-black leaves sprout from the top of the fruit, and a small black flower sits to the left. Bold black outlines and solid fills give it a classic flash look, with Roman numerals visible at the wrist.

The year the orchard at Hollin Ford gave no fruit but one, Maud Tierney went out at dusk with a knife and a basket and found the tree at the bottom of the slope, where the frost never settled. Its leaves were dark as wet slate. The single pomegranate hung low, split along its crown, and the seeds inside were packed so tight they looked like a clenched fist of rubies.

Her father had told her never to eat from a tree that had been waiting. She cut the fruit anyway, because the mill owner's wife had paid good coin for a fruit that small and that red, and because the bread in the cupboard was mould at the edges. The rind opened in her hands like a book. Inside, the pith was white as a bleached bone, and the seeds sat in their rows like a congregation waiting for the bell.
She ate one seed. Then another. Then she stopped counting, and when she looked up the sun had gone and the orchard was full of small black flowers opening in the grass, each one turning to face her. She set the fruit in the basket, carefully, with the cut side up.
In the morning the mill owner's wife found the basket on her step, the rind still wet, and beside it a single flower pressed flat as a coin. Maud was never seen in Hollin Ford again, but every late summer the lower slope bears one fruit, and nobody picks it.
