Every morning the great pink flower in Queen Ottilie's garden opened its petals and turned its purple hearts to the east, but it would not truly bloom until the baker's girl, Mabel Fenwick, climbed the hill with her round golden sun on a wooden board. Four red discs of pepperoni set out like coins on a tablecloth, and the dark green leaves of the spinach-wood bent low to catch the steam.
The trouble came when the Chancellor, a man who had never once eaten anything warm, ordered the flower dug up and the pie cut into thirds for the treasury. Mabel refused. She stood between the spade and the stalk with flour to her elbows and told him a sun is no sun once a tax collector has divided it. That night the hearts came drifting off the hedges, turquoise and rose, dotted round their edges like stitching, and they settled on her shoulders until the Chancellor sneezed and went home.
By morning the garden had folded its petals over the pie like a lid on a dish, and it has stayed that way ever since. Go up the hill and you'll find it, if you're patient. Just don't ask for a slice.
