Strawberry sprig on a thigh
Traditional · Thigh · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a sprig with four red strawberries, several white five-petal flowers with yellow centres, and layered green leaves. Bold black outlines define each element, with flat red and green fills and small black seed dots on the berries. The sprig runs diagonally across the skin of the thigh, with the leaves and berries filling the frame.

Brother Oswin had kept the physic garden at Saint Ebba's for thirty winters, and every spring wild strawberries came up in the cold ditch behind the infirmary, where nobody had planted them. The abbot called them weeds and had them pulled each June. Oswin called them gifts nobody had asked for, and pulled them himself, slowly, so the roots stayed in the wet clay.

One March a novice called Tilda, sent up from the village with a basket of eggs, found him kneeling in the ditch. He held out four berries on a green stalk. They were red and dotted with black seeds like a bird's egg, and beside them grew white flowers with yellow hearts, five petals each, as neat as a sewn collar. She asked why the abbot hated them. Oswin said the abbot had once been told by a visiting bishop that sweetness was a sin of the tongue, and the abbot had believed him ever since.
The abbot came down to the ditch that same week with a hoe over his shoulder and a face set for pulling. Oswin did not get up. He only sat back on his heels and waited. After a long while the abbot stooped, picked one berry, looked at it for longer than seemed necessary, and put it in his mouth. He chewed and said nothing. Then he handed the hoe to the lay brother behind him and walked back up the path without it.
By midsummer the sprig had crept over the wall and into the herb beds, and the bees came in clouds. On feast days the abbot wore a single leaf tucked in his hood, and Tilda swore that when he thought no one was watching, he touched it the way a man touches a coin he has been given for a kindness.
