Poppy bouquet and dotwork diamond on thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A bouquet of three open poppy-style flowers with leaves and thin branching stems sits at the centre of the design, outlined in solid black line with shaded centres. A scatter of fine dots forms a diamond shape around the bouquet, with the stems extending towards its points. The tattoo is in black ink only, shown on the outer upper thigh against a plain light background, with denim shorts at the top of the frame.

The pricking wheel is still warm from your hand when Mrs Tregear knocks, twice and then once more, as if she has forgotten the first two. You have been at the kitchen table since five, marking paper with a needle so the fine holes will let charcoal through. Dots first, always dots, because a diamond is only a promise that its points will meet. Then the poppies, three of them, the outer two leaning in like women at a chapel door.

She wants them for a sail bag, the sort the harbour boats carry their spare canvas in. She has brought the cloth herself, rolled under her arm, and spreads it across your table without asking. You tell her the stems will take longer than she thinks. She says the stems are the only part her husband ever looks at, because they go where the rope goes, and you pretend not to understand.
Outside, the tide is out and the wall below the chandlery is thick with poppies that came up in spring from seed nobody planted. Their petals are paper-thin and the colour of a struck match, and they drop before noon. You used to think they were weeds. Now you think they are the only things in town that open all the way without asking the sea for permission.
When the Kestrel rounds the mole at dusk, you are already on the quay with the finished pattern folded inside your coat. You do not hand it over. You unfold it against the wall, the dots catching the last of the light, and wait for her to see the flowers the needle made and the diamond that holds them.
