Poppy with ink splatter on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A red poppy with a dark purple centre and yellow stamens sits at the centre of the design, with soft orange and red shading on the petals. Black splatters, spray marks and drips radiate outwards and run down below the flower, giving a loose, painterly effect. A small dark bird figure is partly visible at the lower right of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain had been falling on Tallow Cross market for nine days when Mabel Quaile set up her barrow beside the fountain. She sold poppies, though no one in the town had seen one grow for years. She said they came from the far side of the hills, where the ground was red with them, and she took payment in anything that would stain: a thumb of soot, a spoon of beetroot juice, a bent nail gone orange with rust.

Each Thursday a boy called Tobias Renn came with a jar of ink he had boiled from oak galls and lamp black. He wanted a flower that would not wash out in the weather. Mabel told him that ink was the only thing rain could not take, but it would run wherever the rain ran, and every mark would find its own path down the page. He laughed at that and bought one stem with a single copper button.

On the ninth day he tipped his jar over her best bloom to see whether she had been boasting. The ink burst across the canvas in black spokes and spatters, and a long drip found the edge of the barrow and fell through the gap in the boards. Mabel did not scold him. She pressed a damp petal flat against the wet cobbles and said that was the rain's own signature, and that every flower it touched would carry one.

By morning the stalls were gone, but the cobbles from the fountain to the church steps were marked with dark runs, and at the root of each run a red stain had opened like a poppy. Tobias walked the length of the square counting them, and nobody in Tallow Cross argued with his sums.
