Portable turntable with vinyl on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows an open portable turntable with a vinyl record on the platter, a raised tonearm and a rounded carry case lid. The subject is built from fine stippled dots and clean outlines, with dense dotted shading on the case and record to create form and depth. The design is entirely black and grey and sits across the forearm, with the arm and a striped shirt visible in the background.

The landlord had left the suitcase on the bedsit step with a note saying it was not his, and it was not hers either, which is how Ruth came to be sitting on the floor at eleven at night with a grey portable turntable across her knees. The lid still had a sticker in one corner, a crooked star cut from a cereal box, and a single record was already on the platter, its label worn down to a pale oval.

She did not know what it was. Some dance band, maybe, or a man talking about the weather in 1961. She lifted the arm with two fingers, the way you lift a sleeping cat, and set the needle down on the edge. Crackle, then a thin breath of strings, then a woman's voice sitting a little too close to the microphone, as if she were perched on the arm of the chair beside Ruth.

The record turned for four minutes, then the groove ran out and the needle slid into the dead centre and hummed there. Ruth thought about getting up. Instead she left it, listening to the hiss the way you would listen to rain on a roof, and found she had stopped counting the hours until the van came for the rest of the flat.

In the morning she wrapped the case in a tea towel and carried it to the window, setting it on the sill where the light could reach the dust on the lid. She lifted the tonearm, rested it on its cradle, and left the record where it lay, still turning slowly in the sun.
