Geometric triangles and circles on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A forearm tattoo of interlocking geometric shapes, including a large triangle with a shaded swirling wave or vortex inside it, smaller triangles, a square and several circles joined by dotted construction lines. The shapes are built from fine dots and stippled shading that gives the central form depth, while the outlines are crisp and even. The ink is entirely black and grey, and the design spans the forearm diagonally against a plain light background.

Brannock had cut the triangle three times before it sat true, and each time the compass needle slipped on the brass. Ottoline Vey, who kept the instrument shop on Kettle Row, said the trouble was the sea in the middle of it. You cannot rule a whirlpool, she told the boy. You have to build it one dot at a time, and the dots must all be the same weight, or the water looks like it is standing still.

The commission came from a surveyor called Tobias Crane, who wanted the Greyhaven tidal race on paper before the harbour board drowned it under concrete. Three lighthouses marked the corners. The buoys were circles, joined by dotted sightlines that crossed like threads on a loom. He wanted the water drawn as a funnel, dense at the throat, so that a man looking at it would feel his stomach drop. Ottoline worked at it for four nights with a single needle, stippling until her wrist ached and the ink went grey in the lamplight.

On the fourth night she noticed the dots at the centre were gathering too tightly, as though the sea wanted to climb out of the paper. Tobias came in early to collect it, looked for a long time, and then asked her to stop. The centre, he said, was where the Marjorie had gone down in the autumn with his brother aboard, and the race had never given anything back. He did not want it filled.

She left the throat of the funnel bare, a clean white eye no bigger than a shilling. Around it the dots kept turning, patient and exact, going nowhere and returning to the same small emptiness each time, the way the water did.
