Crossed fingers gesture on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A hand with the index and middle fingers crossed, drawn in a bold black outline with a cuff at the wrist. The shading on the fingers and the side of the hand is built up with stippled dots, and the linework is clean and even. The design is shown in close view on the forearm, with plain skin and a textured pale wall behind.

You asked me last summer whether I still believed the old promise, that if you crossed your fingers behind your back the thing you wanted would hold still long enough to be caught. I told you it was nonsense. I was lying, and you knew it, because you had taught me the trick in the first place, pressing my middle finger over my first on the wall of the packing shed while the wasps drowned in the cider vats. Well, I have tried it this week, and I am not sure I believe anything else.
The Bramleys are still on the far rows. If you come up on Saturday, bring your gloves and the good scissors, and we will pick what the lorry leaves us. Leave the car in the lane. The gate sticks and only one of us knows how to lift it.
Yours, with fingers firmly crossed, Margaret
