Portrait couple and red rose on a thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A man with slicked-back dark hair and a moustache and a woman with long dark hair and a red pendant are shown in a framed portrait. A large red rose sits across the bottom, with dark green leaves and a spider web sketched around the figures. The bold outlines, smooth shading and saturated red, green and purple ink are typical of neo-traditional work, and the piece is set against the skin of a thigh.

The web across the conservatory door had been rebuilt again by morning, every strand taut as piano wire, and Edwin Vance stood in his dressing gown holding a cup of tea gone cold. Mildred had not eaten the spider. She never did. She said the creature paid its rent in flies, and that a house with no lodgers was a house with no manners.

Mildred was in the garden, where she had been since dawn, cutting roses for a neighbour's funeral. She wore the black silk she kept for occasions and the garnet pendant that had been her mother's, the one that caught the light whenever she bent. Edwin watched her from the kitchen window the way he had watched her across a ballroom forty years earlier, when she had asked him to dance and he had not known how to refuse a woman who looked at him as though he were a dare.
The neighbour's widower arrived at eleven with a wreath of his own and an offer on the house. Mildred received him in the drawing room with a single rose held out in her gloved hand, and Edwin noticed she did not offer her hand, only the flower. The man took it, pricked his thumb on a thorn he had not seen, and went quite pale. 'You'll want to think about the hedge,' she said kindly. He did not come back, and the hedge grew another foot by spring.
That evening Edwin poured the cold tea into the fern by the door. The spider, reassured, began again.
