Stormtrooper helmet and soldier on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large Stormtrooper helmet dominates the upper part of the forearm, with a smaller kneeling soldier holding a rifle beneath it. The work uses soft, detailed shading with fine speckled texture on the helmet and a dark, smudged background. The piece is entirely black and grey, and the arm is cropped so that no face is visible.

Mattias Greave had been scraping soot from the visors since the lamps went out at the harbour works, and by the third bell the white shells on the rack looked like pale eggs somebody had left to cool. Nobody paid him to think about faces. The garrison wanted every helmet fitted before the ferry docked, and the sergeant had a habit of holding each one up to the window to hunt for dents.

Old Ruth ran the forge and did not talk while she worked. She had cast the first batch from tin and shell grit, and she had told him once that a helmet was only as honest as the hand that finished it. Mattias pressed a dry rag into the speckled crown of a shell until the pits showed like frost on a windowpane. Outside, a rifle stock knocked against a crate, and a soldier crouched on the quay swore softly at the wet.
The soldier came in out of the rain with his own helmet under one arm, its dome scarred and its eye slits gone dark. It was Piet Dorn from the street behind the chandler's, a boy who had once bet Mattias a whole herring that he could swim to the buoy. He asked if the shell could be cleaned well enough that he could see the sea from inside it. Mattias said he could try. He worked until the lamp guttered, buffing the brow until it was so smooth that nothing in the room showed on it except a faint grey smear of their two shapes.
When the ferry horn sounded, Piet pulled the helmet on and turned to the door. Mattias took a nail from the bench and scored one thin line low on the left cheek, where no sergeant would think to look. Piet would know it was his by touch. Ruth would know it too, and she would never say so.
