Woman portrait with blue rose on arm

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A bold portrait of a smiling woman with dark hair in an updo and a purple headband, with a small heart marking on her cheek, framed by a scalloped outline. A blue rose with green leaves wraps the lower left of the design. The work uses thick black outlines with smooth colour shading in skin tones, purple, blue and green on a plain background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ada had cooked for the Marguerite Rose for eleven years and had never once seen the skipper smile, so when the new deckhand, a lad called Tomasz from Gdansk, asked why the cook kept a face pinned above the range, she handed him the wooden spoon, told him to mind the porridge, and didn't answer.

The face belonged to a singer she had heard once on a Hull wireless in 1952, laughing at something off microphone, her dark hair swept up under a purple headband she had surely ironed that morning. Ada had cut the picture from a magazine left in the mess and kept it dry in a tobacco tin, and it had survived two gales and a fire in the paraffin locker.

Tomasz stirred. The boat lurched, and a tin of evaporated milk rolled off the shelf and struck the deck with a sound like a dropped coin. He asked what the little red heart was for, the one on her cheek, and Ada said it was a mark left by a woman who had been told she was too much and had decided to be exactly that.

The rose was the last thing she drew on the back of the page, in biro, the week the Marguerite Rose limped into Grimsby with a split hull and no skipper willing to take her out again. Ada had no blue ink, so she had coloured it with the bluing from the laundry tin. Tomasz said it looked like the sea at dusk. Ada said that was the idea, and she salted the pot twice.
