Black and grey portrait of a man on a thigh
Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo is a realistic portrait of a man with a thick moustache, swept-back hair and a stern expression, shown from the shoulders up. It is rendered in smooth black and grey shading with soft gradients across the face and hair and fine detail around the eyes. The photo is taken straight on against the skin of the upper leg, with the portrait filling most of the frame.

Dear Carol,

You will not believe what Reg Tanner has been doing in the number 4 lift. He gets in on the ground floor, folds his arms under that moustache, and stares at the doors until they close. Then he rides up to the fourteenth and back down again, like he is inspecting the place. The council man came on Tuesday with his clipboard, and Reg just looked at him until he went red and wrote something down. Nobody has the nerve to tell him to get out.
I got in with him on Thursday with the shopping. He didn't say a word for nine floors. Then at the seventh he said, "Your bag's splitting," and it was, a bottle of lemonade rolling about in the corner. He had a roll of brown parcel tape in his coat pocket and mended it without looking at me. Forty years a bus conductor, he is. He still checks everyone's ticket with his eyes.
I asked him why he rides it so much. He said the lift is the only place in the block where nobody can shout at him through a letterbox. Then he said the lads from twenty-two have been waiting in the stairwell with eggs since their mum went into hospital, and if he stands in the lift they walk up with him and nobody throws anything. I thought he was daft, Carol. I don't now.
Last night the lift was out altogether. I saw him on the stairs, slow, one hand on the rail, carrying his own bag and two of the boys' school bags too. He looked straight ahead like a man who had never once been stared at back. I held the fourteenth floor door for him. He nodded. Write soon.
Love, Pauline
