Mrs Hollis had told the lodgers twice that the bath was for bathing and not for boots, and on the third Thursday of the August season she stood at the foot of the stairs with the rent book open and waited. Mr Crane came down whistling. He saw the book, grinned at the two sailors behind him, and said, "Who's going to judge me, then? You?"

She did not answer him. She climbed to the landing, past the framed regatta photographs and the pair of small flags her husband had nailed either side of the window in 1953, and she took down the grey portrait from the back room where it hung above the kettle. The painter in number nine had made it for her the summer he could not pay his bill. It was done in soft pencil with careful shading, and she had always thought the mouth looked as if it knew something.

She carried it down and propped it on the hall table, facing the door. Crane read the lettering she had added along the base herself, in heavy black strokes with a brush and a jar of Indian ink, and his grin slipped. By breakfast the rent lay on the table in exact coins, his boots stood on the mat outside his door, and the sailors had moved to the far end of the dining room.

That evening Mrs Hollis dusted the frame and hung the portrait back above the kettle, where the light was good. Nobody in Skerrow Bay ever tried the bath with their boots on again.
