Greyscale portrait tattoo on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A large greyscale portrait of a figure with a fringed hairstyle, clasped hands and a pendant necklace fills the upper arm. The face and hands are rendered with soft shading and fine hair strokes, with darker outlines around the shoulders and chest. The composition is centred on the arm, and the background is blurred skin and clothing.

Dear Maureen,

You will not believe what Mr Okonedo has done with the lift shaft wall. Last Thursday he came up to the fourteenth floor with a tin of primer under one arm and a sketchbook under the other, and asked if he could paint me. Not the wall. Me. I told him I had nothing to wear but my good cardigan and a face that has seen three decades of bin day. He said that was exactly the sort of face he wanted, and that the cardigan could stay on.

He worked in charcoal first, on the back of a council leaflet about recycling, then in grey wash. Every evening he came round with a fresh cup of tea he never drank, and he held his hands together under his chin the way I do when the lift breaks down and I am waiting for the engineer to arrive and be rude to me. He caught that. I had not known I did it until I saw it on the paper.

The portrait came out larger than I expected, and sadder, and somehow kinder. The fringe is too severe. My mother would have had something to say about the pendant, which he insisted on, though I have never owned a pendant in my life. Yesterday the caretaker stopped me on the stairs and asked whether the lady in the picture was my granddaughter. I said she was a lady who had been waiting a long time for a lift.

Write soon and tell me whether you still have that brass key ring. I want it in the picture next time.

Love, Pat
