Colour realism tattoo of a grimacing woman in a head wrap, with the words Ain't nobody got time for that beneath, on an upper arm.

Grimacing portrait with quote on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A realistic colour portrait of a woman in a head wrap shows her mouth open in a grimace, with her eyes narrowed. Smooth shading builds the skin tones and the wrap, with soft green and orange highlights around the head. Bold purple and pink lettering with a shadowed outline runs across the lower part of the design, and the photo is taken straight on at close range.

The kettle has boiled twice by the time you think to ask about the roof fall at number three, and Mrs Pruett is already out at the line with her sleeves shoved past the elbow, pegging sheets against a wind that comes down off the pit heaps like it owns the place. You start the question. She cuts you off before the second word.

"Ain't nobody got time for that," she says, and drops a peg into your palm as if it were a verdict. "Hold them, don't stand there gawping. Dai's on the bank shift and he'll be wanting dry socks."

You hold them. You hold the wet hem of a bedsheet while she works along the wire, and you listen to the village do what it does: the Co-op queue, the lamp-room rota, who said what to whom at the Institute. Every rumour gets the same treatment, a snap of cotton and a quick, flat glance, then she is on to the next thing. It should irritate you. Instead it steadies you, the way a line steadies a sheet in a gale.

The cage starts running again at four. You know because the whistle goes, a long one, then the short one that means nobody's dead. Mrs Pruett hears it from the back step with a peg between her teeth. She does not sit down. She lifts the kettle off the range and pours three cups before the steam has finished rising, and she sets one in front of the empty chair.

"Drink that while it's hot," she says. "Cry after. Kettle's cold by then anyway."
