Postmark stamp tattoo on chest

Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a black ink tattoo of a postmark stamp on the upper chest, with a circular stamp reading BUFFALO NY, PM and 15 JUL 2005 next to a set of wavy cancellation lines. The linework is solid and even, with no shading, and the outline of the stamp is clear against the skin. The ink is a single dark tone, and the composition is tight, with a dark garment held to one side at the left edge of the frame.

The envelope arrived on a Tuesday with your handwriting pressed hard into the paper, the way you write when you are trying not to say too much. Inside was a single sheet from the diner on Elmwood, and on it you had drawn the stamp you meant to use for the next one: a round mark, BUFFALO NY, the date underlined twice, and beside it the wavy lines that were supposed to mean the lake in July.

I went to the post office on Cross Street with it folded in my coat. The clerk, a man with a pencil behind his ear, held it up to the light and asked whether I wanted it sent or kept. I said kept. He laughed and said nobody keeps mail, and I said that was exactly the trouble with the world.

I still have it. The ink has faded to the colour of weak tea, and the lines have softened the way a sea does at dusk. Last week I took it to the shop on Hallam Road, the one with the brass bell over the door, and asked the woman there to copy the stamp exactly, every letter, the numbers, the waves. She looked at me over her glasses for a long moment, then pulled out her needles and said, very gently, that the lake would sit better lower down, where a person could feel it moving.
