Princess with swallows and roses design
Neo-trad · Colour · Flash
A coloured illustration in a neo-traditional tattoo style shows a long-haired blonde animated princess with her arms raised behind her head. Two purple swallows sit above her and red roses with green leaves frame her lower body, with a ribbon banner reading Once Upon a Dream along the bottom. The bold outlines and warm parchment-toned background suggest a design sheet, and the image appears to be a product photo of this design on a phone case.

The swallows left the barn on the last Tuesday of September, all at once, the way Dad said they always did, as if somebody had blown a whistle only they could hear. I stood in the yard with a bucket of cold milk and watched the empty mud cups under the eaves until the light went. Mum had painted the rafters blue the summer before she got ill, and the birds had liked it. Now the rafters were just rafters.

By January the frost lay on the rose bush by the gate like sugar on a cake, and the canes were black and bare. Dad said it was dead. I said it was sleeping, which was the sort of thing Mum used to say, and he didn't argue, which was how I knew he wanted to believe it too. We had calving to think about, and the feed bill, and the ewes that kept getting through the fence to the turnips. I kept a list on the back of an envelope and added nothing to it that wasn't work.
Then on a Sunday in February the wind swung round to the south and the thaw came in one long drip off the gutters. I took the secateurs down to the gate out of sheer restlessness and cut into the nearest cane, expecting nothing. Under the bark it was green, a thin bright line like a scratch on a blade. I cut another, and another, and the green ran all the way down.
I dug a trench along the south wall of the barn, where the swallows had always come in, and laid three canes in it and pressed the soil down with my boots. Dad came out with the tea and stood beside me without speaking for a long time. Then he said the rose would have needed doing anyway. A blackbird sang from the eaves, and I thought, not yet, but soon, and went in to find the box of ribbons Mum kept for the church flowers.
