Alice with white rabbit banner design

Neo-trad · Colour · Flash

A coloured illustration of a blonde girl with a black bow and blue eyes, holding a white rabbit with a red eye. She is framed by a rope-edged oval with purple flowers, a white calla lily, red mushrooms and red roses, and a curled ribbon banner across the bottom. The shading is smooth and painterly against a warm brown background with a soft glow behind the figure.

The rabbit had been riding on the dashboard since Barstow, its red eye fixed on the tarmac as if it had been hired to navigate. Wendy Okafor had stopped arguing with it somewhere after the third shuttered motel. The map in the glovebox ran off the edge of the page, so she had only a scrap of faded lettering cut from a diner's sign to go on: FOLLOW THE WHITE RABBIT.

Forty miles on, the road gave out into packed sand. A calla lily grew from a crack beside a cattle grid, white as a bar of soap, and a ring of red toadstools circled a tyre planted upright in the dirt. The rabbit hopped down and sat in the middle of the track, waiting. Wendy climbed out, left the engine ticking, and followed it across a dry channel towards a dead cottonwood where a rope swing hung without a breath of wind.

A plank was nailed to the trunk with names scratched into it, none of them hers, and beneath them one word that had been gone over several times with a penknife: wait. Her phone showed no signal. The rabbit settled onto the plank and looked at her, patient as a clock.

She understood then what the diner's painter had meant, or what he had meant to whoever first paid him for it. She untied the rope, sat on the swing, and let it take her weight. When she looked up the rabbit had gone, and in the sand where it had sat lay a single white feather and a note in careful capitals: YOU ARE NOT LATE. SIT A WHILE.
