Neo-traditional tattoo design of a woman with long dark hair, feathers, hummingbirds and sunflowers, with a banner reading choose your own path.

Woman with hummingbirds and path banner

Neo-trad · Colour · Flash

A framed print of a cartoon-style woman with long dark hair, feathers and a rope-framed oval, with hummingbirds at her shoulder and autumn leaves and sunflowers around the lower edge. Bold dark outlines and smooth shading give the figure a neo-traditional look, and the banner across the bottom reads choose your own path. Warm sepia tones form the background, with green, red and gold accents in the foliage and flowers.

The hem was still pinned when Aunt Verity announced that the bride had decided to walk to the church instead of riding in the Daimler. Three miles of lane in October, she said, with the hedges going gold and nobody's permission needed. Her mother had already rung the florist twice that morning, and the florist had sent back a cake of white roses that nobody wanted.

We sat on the back step of the Bell at Tenterden with the sewing box between us. Verity talked while her needle went in and out, as if the thread were keeping time. She told me about her own wedding, when she had promised the vicar one thing and her father another, and how she had gone out through the orchard with a jam jar of sugar water because her grandmother swore a hummingbird would come to any bright red thing hung in a tree. None had come that year. She said she had never forgiven the bird for it.

At half past eleven the bride came down the lane in a plain cream dress, with sunflowers from the allotment in one fist and maple leaves caught in her hair. The coach sat empty at the gate with its horses stamping. I bit off the last thread on the hem just as she reached the lychgate, and Verity pressed my hand and said nothing at all.

Nobody had told her the path was hers to pick. She had simply picked it, and the rest of us followed in our good shoes through the falling leaves, carrying the flowers she had left behind.
