Road through mountains and night sky on a forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows an asphalt road with white edge lines and a dashed yellow centre line, rising towards purple and green hills. Above them sit a turquoise sky with soft white clouds, a dark starry patch, and a large red angular shape with a bright star burst. Thin blue and yellow orbit-like lines loop around the upper section, and the shading is smooth and painterly throughout with bold, saturated colour.

Dear Nell,

I am writing this on the back of a petrol receipt because the motel has no paper and the lamp keeps flickering. You will laugh, but I took the mountain road after all. The map said it was shut past Carrow Gap, and the man at the garage only shrugged and said the tarmac had been fine on Tuesday. So I drove up with the windows down and the radio gone to hiss.
Above the tree line the sky turned that impossible turquoise, the colour of the baths at Harrow, with clouds lying low against the rock as though someone had dabbed them on with a thumb. A dark patch opened overhead and the stars came out thick as spilt salt. I pulled onto the verge twice just to look. The road ran ahead in a grey ribbon with its yellow dashes, bending towards a peak with a red shape on it, sharp as a folded paper star, a burst of light flaring off one point.
At the lay-by a woman in a fleece was holding a telescope steady against the wind. She said the light was a satellite that had come down in the spring, and that the locals called it the Kite because nobody could agree what else it looked like. I asked if it was dangerous. She said only to people who stopped to stare, and handed me the eyepiece anyway.
Through it I saw nothing but a red blur and a loop of blue line where the star caught the thin air. I think I'll walk up in the morning. The road doesn't go anywhere else, and I'm tired of looking at things through glass. Don't tell Mum where I am yet. Love, Ros.
