Road through mountains and night sky on an arm

Geometric · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a road with a yellow dashed centre line running into mountains, with a teal night sky filled with small stars and white clouds above. A large red and orange faceted shape sits at the top, with thin blue looping lines curving around it. The work uses bold flat blocks of colour with smooth gradients and sharp geometric edges, set against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Her father towed the barge Marigold through eleven locks a day and never once looked up at the road that ran along the top of the cutting. The road went into the mountains, he said, and mountains were for people who had nothing to carry. Nell kept her eyes on the water because that was what she was told to do.

She was nine when she tied a red paper kite to the stern rail. It was made from a page of an old almanac and bent willow sticks. Each night after the last lock she let it out on blue string, and it rose above the towpath until it hung level with the white clouds drifting over the hills. The stars came out over the teal sky one at a time, and she counted them until her father called her in.

One evening the wind came round from the north and tore the string from her hands. The kite climbed past the cutting, past the stars, and came down on the road itself, lying face up on the black tarmac where a lorry would have flattened it. Nell climbed the bank with the lamp swinging. The kite lay across the centre line, and the yellow dashes ran out ahead of it toward the purple peaks.

She did not go after it. She stood in the road with her boots in the dust and understood that the road had been waiting for somebody to stop on it. When she walked back down to the Marigold her father was already at the tiller, looking up for once. He did not ask where she had been. He said the water would keep until morning, and that she could start from here if she liked.
