Profile and words on a calf
Blackwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A woman's profile with swirling dark hair sits inside a circle of tick marks, with lettering that includes keep living and keep pushing on. The linework is loose and sketchy, with grey washes, black ink splatters and a drip running down the leg. The tattoo is black and grey on a bare calf, photographed against a window and a dark floor.

The ink ran before you could stop it, a black thread sliding down the page toward the table edge, and you let it go. Old Marta's ledger lay open where the last cottage stood at the forest's edge, its margins crowded with tick marks, one for every day since the charcoal burners packed their carts and the road grew quiet. Nobody came up that track anymore except the wind and, once a season, the post.

She had written words along the borders in a hand that shook more each winter: keep living, keep pushing on, keep breathing, keep smiling. You asked her once why she didn't paint them on the church wall where people would see. She said the trees were the only ones listening, and trees never repeated anything they heard.
On the morning the thaw came, a woman walked out of the pines with her hair full of rain and coiled like wet bracken, carrying a tin lantern she had not lit. She asked for the book. You didn't ask why. She turned the pages slowly, traced a finger over the circle of ticks that had nearly closed, and said that Marta had counted right and the forest had let them both be.
When she left, you took up the pen. The last empty tick waited at the edge of the circle, and beside it the ink had pooled into a dark star where the nib had splashed. You made the mark, then let a drip run down the grain of the table, the way Marta always had, and wrote the only word the page still needed: here.
