Black and red sketch-style tattoo on an upper arm showing a female figure, a shaded skull, radiating lines and red gear motifs.

Sketched figure and skull on upper arm

Dotwork · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A large sleeve-style tattoo covers the upper arm and shoulder, showing a female figure with a bun of hair, a dark shaded skull beneath her, and fine radiating lines above. Red sketched gears and floral shapes sit behind the design, with stippled dotwork shading on the skull. The image is a side view of a woman in a grey tank top, with the tattoo filling most of the frame against a light wall.

The brass wheels had rusted again overnight, so Ilse climbed the ladder before the dew could burn off the glasshouse roof. Her grandfather had built the sunburst himself, a wheel of fine copper spokes fixed above the peony beds, and every morning it had to be coaxed back into turning. He used to say the garden kept time for the whole valley, and that the flowers only opened because the wheels told them when.

She found the skull at the foot of the ladder that morning, tucked under the rhubarb where the soil had sunk. It was old and yellow, its jaw bound shut with green copper wire, and it had sat in the earth long enough for roots to thread through its eye sockets. Ilse knew better than to ask her grandfather about it. He had only ever laughed and said that every clock needs a weight.

The gears were red with rust, and when she oiled the axle the whole sunburst shivered and began to ring, a thin note like a struck glass. Below her the peonies unfolded one petal at a time, pale pink and then crimson, the way they always did when the wheel caught.

She set the skull on the potting bench and turned it to the light. The wire came loose in her fingers. Inside, folded tight as a letter, was a slip of paper in her grandfather's cramped hand: Wind it yourself now. The garden will not do it for you.
