The pumpkin won, and before you say the judges were soft on me, Mrs Pascoe's marrow was twice the size and still came second. So the blue rosette is pinned above the range and I am insufferable about it. The hall smelt of cider and wet coats by seven. Dad would have hated the dance band, all accordion and no sense of time, but the Pritchard boys had carried in every trestle that afternoon and the whole room cheered them like heroes.

Mum's soup went into the big copper pan at eight, and the steam rose off it in ribbons right up to the rafters. Everybody stood under it as if it were a blessing. I stirred the whole time, because if I stopped the onions caught, and someone tucked a red leaf from the altar flowers into my hair. I didn't have the heart to take it out.

Ted Harker asked me to dance during the last waltz. I said no, because my shoes were full of pumpkin peel and I smelt like a harvest supper. So he danced with the coat stand instead, bowing very gravely to a hat, and I laughed so hard I had to sit down on a crate of apples.

I've put the stalk on the windowsill to dry. When it's brown I'll post you a piece, so you can see how orange it still was in November. Come up at Christmas and bring your good shoes. Ted has been asking after you, which I think is his way of asking after the soup.
