They went down the slipway in a rush of snow and sparks off the iron ring. At the foot of it the harbour lay black and silver, and the boats came in one by one with their lanterns lit. Hobb's nose glowed red in the dusk, and the fishermen's children shrieked to see a reindeer wearing a snowman like a hat.
By dawn the tide had turned, the snow had softened, and Pim was nothing but a puddle with a carrot nose bobbing against the harbour wall. Hobb stood on the quay with his antlers bare and dripping, waiting for the next winter, which was the only way the sea ever answered anybody.
