Purple elephant on the ribs
Ribs · Colour · Photo
A flat, graphic elephant in purple, grey and yellow sits inside a wavy, black-outlined shape that trails off to one side. The shapes are filled with solid colour with simple shading on the elephant's body and ears. The two-panel photo shows the tattoo on the side of a torso, with a pink top visible above it.

Edie had painted the elephant on the awning over three weeks of wet mornings, and by August it was the only thing on the front at Westgate that anybody could agree was worth looking at. Her father sold ices from the hatch beneath it and swore the paint was safe because she had licked the brush to test it. The canvas was stiff with varnish and striped gold at the hem, and when the sea wind came off the Channel it bellied out like a sail, so the elephant seemed to lean into the weather with its purple ears flat and one grey foot raised, as if it had remembered a train it meant to catch.

The night the gale came, the awning tore loose from its rope at two in the morning and went rolling down the prom. Edie heard it slapping the railings and ran out in her nightdress. The canvas was unspooling across the sand like a carpet laid out for someone important, and the elephant was still on it, face to the sea, its long black-edged tail trailing off over the shingle toward the groyne. She caught the hem and held on, and the wind lifted her two feet off the stones before she let go.
In the morning the awning was folded over the pier rail, corners squared, in a way nobody in Westgate could have managed. The elephant now faced inland, toward the high street and the bakery and the chapel. Her father stood looking at it with his tea going cold and said nothing for a long time. Then he climbed the ladder, took up the yellow, and gave the elephant a second set of feet, so it would have something to stand on the next time the wind came calling.
