Watercolour elephant head on upper back
Back · Colour · Photo
A large elephant head in profile fills the upper back, drawn with loose, broken black linework and tusks curving downward. Soft blue and violet washes bleed outward behind the head and across the ear, giving a painted, watercolour effect. The colour is concentrated around the head, with plain skin visible at the edges of the composition.

The ferrymen of Calder Reach still argue about the colour of the elephant. Those who saw it come up out of the fog on the spring tide swear it was grey as wet slate, but Mabel Scoular, who kept the lamp at the bar, said it was blue at the ears and violet about the eyes, the way a bruise goes in its second week. Nobody believed her until the rain came.

It had walked from the far side of the sea, so the tale goes, carrying nothing but a sack of salt on its back and a lump of lamp-black stuck behind one tusk. Its tusks curved down like two oars left to dry. Where it stood on the mud the water pulled its outline loose, and the lines of its head broke apart the way a sketch does when the hand lifts the pen before it is finished. Gulls landed on its shoulders and did not fly away.
Mabel brought it a bucket of fresh water from the well behind the chapel, because that was what her mother had done for strays. The elephant drank it all, then lowered its head and let her trace the ridges on its brow with one finger. Her finger came away violet. She said afterwards that it tasted of plums and rain, and that the colour did not wash from her hand until the following Michaelmas.
In the spring the elephant turned for the sea again, leaving a wash of blue across the reed beds like a tide mark. Fishermen still find pieces of it caught in their nets, thin as paper, and the children of Calder Reach say you can hold one up to the sun and see the whole animal drawn in it, looking back over its shoulder, waiting for someone to follow.
