Purple feather with birds and script on the side
Realism · Ribs · Mixed · Photo
A shaded purple feather runs diagonally across the skin, with fine vein lines and darker purple edges giving it depth. Black silhouetted birds rise from the top of the feather toward the upper left, and a black cursive script reads "Birds of a feather set me free" along its right side. The tattoo is shown in close, soft natural light against a plain skin background.

Old Marta kept the feather in a tin on the windowsill, the way her mother had kept the key to a house that no longer stood. Every spring the starlings came down over the fen in a black ragged cloud, and every spring she counted them from the step with her hands folded in her apron. The village children said she could tell the number by the sound of their wings alone, and the baker's boy once swore she had counted a hundred and four and been right.

The purple feather had come from a heron that had died in the reeds the winter her husband went to the coast. Nobody in the village had seen a purple heron before, and the men said it was a sign of bad water. Marta only picked the feather up, dried it on the stove, and told the children it had been dyed by the sunset over the marsh, which was as good an explanation as any.
In April the boy came running with news that a flock had settled on the church roof and would not leave. Marta walked up the lane with the tin under her arm. She stood beneath the spire and opened the lid, and when the birds lifted she pulled the feather free and let the wind take it. It spun up among them, a violet smudge against the grey sky, and the starlings wheeled around it once before they scattered over the water.
The next morning the tin was empty, and on the sill lay a single black feather she had never seen before. She kept it there for the rest of her life.
