Black and grey flash design of three shaded feathers at different angles, with the script line I may not see you, but I can feel you running between them.

Three feathers with script quote

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

The design shows three shaded feathers scattered across a white background, each drawn with fine hatched barbs and a stem that tapers to a point. A flowing script reads "I may not see you, but I can feel you", with the feathers placed in the gaps between the words. The work is entirely black ink and grey shading, with clean outlines and soft tonal gradients on the feather vanes.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The gulls had been following the Maud Eleanor since the Shetland light was a grey smudge behind us, and Tomasz swore one of them had lost a feather in the wash off the stern and kept coming back for it. Nobody believed him. Nobody believes a man who talks to birds at four in the morning, least of all the skipper, who had his own troubles with the hydraulics and no patience for a deckhand who named the gulls after dead footballers.

The net came up heavy that Thursday, full of haddock and one lump of sodden rope that turned out to be a fishing glove with a child's name stitched inside the cuff. Dad wrapped it in a rag and put it in the wheelhouse drawer, meaning to post it back to Peterhead when we made port. He never did. Instead he kept it on the shelf above the radio, where it sat for years, faded at the knuckles, until the boat was sold and the shelf went with her.

What I remember most is the evening after, when the sea went flat as a plate and the lads sat on the hatch covers with their tea. Tomasz pulled a small grey feather from the lining of his oilskin, one he'd picked off the deck and kept, and turned it slowly in the last of the light. He said the gull was out there somewhere, sulking, and would be back at the stern tomorrow if we were lucky. The skipper laughed. Then he stopped laughing and went below to find the glove, and when he came back up he held it the way you'd hold a hand.
