Purple magnolia branch down a thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A branch of purple magnolia flowers with yellow centres, buds and dark stems runs diagonally down the outer thigh, with a larger magnolia bloom and leaves on the upper back at the top left. The petals are shaded in lilac and violet with soft highlights, while the stems and small leaves use fine dark linework. The composition follows the curve of the leg, with the flowers grouped densely at the top and tapering to a single bud at the bottom.

Mara had been told the magnolia on the hill belonged to nobody, which was why the miller's girl went up there after the harvest bells. It was late summer and the orchard below had already dropped its windfalls into the long grass, but the old tree at the top of the lane still held its cups open, violet at the base and paler at the tips, as if spring had forgot to leave.

The keeper of the orchard was a woman called Hesper Vane, who lived in a stone cottage among the bee skeps. She said the tree had struck a bargain with the frost. It would keep one bloom each season for whoever asked for it properly, and asking properly meant leaving the tree something it had lost. Mara had nothing but a bent hairpin and her brother's tin whistle, which had gone missing in June. She left the whistle at the root and walked home without looking back.
That night a branch came down the lane in the dark. It crept over the wall and along the hedge, flowers first, buds swinging like lanterns, until it reached the step of the mill cottage and stopped. Her brother heard the whistle sounding from the top of the hill every evening after that, thin and sweet, and the branch grew a little more each night, always thinning towards its end.
In the morning Mara found one bud left at the bottom of the step, closed tight and no bigger than a thumb. She knelt beside it for a long while. Then she left it where it was, because some things are kept by not being picked.
