Outlined elephant with rainbow wash on forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A small elephant outline sits on the inner forearm, filled with fine dotted and floral patterns, with a pink cheek and a dot eye. A soft rainbow wash of red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple trails behind the figure, and the linework is black. The image is a close, evenly lit shot against a plain white background.

The trough had frozen overnight again, a grey lid of ice that I had to break with the heel of the shovel before the heifers would come near it. My breath hung in front of me while I worked, and the sky over the top field was the colour of cold porridge. Dad was still in bed with his hip, so the list was mine: feed, water, and whatever Gran had asked for before she went into the home in October.

What she had asked for was the elephant. It sat on the high shelf in the barn, wedged between a tin of nails and a jar of baler twine, a little carved thing no bigger than my palm that the travelling fair left behind the summer I was seven. Gran had painted it herself with a sable brush and a steady hand, dotting lace around its ears and a daisy on its back, then a pink cheek that she said made it look shy about being looked at. I took it down and the dust came off on my gloves.
The colours were the accident. That same August a thunderstorm had flooded the field where the fair had parked, and the rainbow over the hay bales came down so low that Gran swore it had landed on the gate. She caught a trickle of it in a jam jar, tipped it over the elephant's back and let it run, so the red and gold and violet trailed behind it like a sprinkled path. Nobody has ever been able to tell me whether that was true.
I wedged it on the dashboard of the pickup so the heater could reach it, and drove the feed out to the field with the trough steaming behind me. When I got back the ice had gone and the frost had left the glass, and the little painted elephant had kept its colours through the whole cold morning, the way Gran always said a good thing should.
