Black and grey peony cluster on upper back
Dotwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A cluster of three or four peony-style flowers with layered, curling petals and leaves fills the upper back, with a dense dark shadow at the centre. The linework is bold and dark, and the petals are shaded with fine stippled dots that create soft grey tones. The image is shot straight on from behind, with the subject's head cropped at the top and the tattoo centred in the frame.

By four in the morning the peonies on Bay Seven have given up. You stand at the sluice with the jar in both hands and watch the petals loosen and drop onto the grey lino, soft as wet paper. Nobody else is awake to see it except the drip stand in bed nine, humming to itself.

Mr Okafor had them sent up every Thursday, three heavy heads in a jar that never matched the ward's white mugs. He lay in bed eleven, the one by the window that looks over the car park, and he would not let anyone move the vase onto the trolley. 'They need the light,' he told you once, though the light on that side is only the orange glare from the lamps outside A and E.
On the last night he was awake, he asked you to cut the stems shorter so the flowers would sit in the cracked mug from the staff kitchen. His hands shook too much to do it himself. You did it with the nail scissors from your pocket, and the dark centres of the blooms stayed black and tight even as the outer petals curled back like the edges of old pages.
In the morning the bed was stripped and the mug stood on the sill. You left it there. Nobody on days ever asked whose it was, and by the time the sun came up over the multi-storey, the flowers had opened another inch, as if they had been waiting for someone to stop watching them.
