Purple swirl flourish tattoo close-up

Fine line · Colour · Photo

A close-up of a single tattoo made of looping, curling lines in a purple or deep blue ink, forming a symmetrical flourish with two spiral curls at the top and bottom. The linework is smooth and tapered with no shading, and the design fills most of the frame against a warm, slightly blurred skin tone. The body part is not clearly visible.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had come early over the Hollin Pass that year, and Dad's old mule, Pudding, refused the third bend like a man refusing a bad bill. I was sixteen and had been sent up with the mail sack because my uncle's knee had gone again. The sack held letters for the shepherds' hut, a seed catalogue, and a summons for a man named Thaddeus Rook who lived, as far as anyone knew, nowhere at all.

Pudding stopped at the cairn where the road bent back on itself twice before running down into the valley. I got off and walked him past the drop, talking nonsense to keep my feet warm. At the hut I found Old Mair sitting by a stove that smoked like a bad chimney, copying figures into a ledger with a steel nib. She signed for the sack with a flourish that looped out and curled back on itself, twice, like a river that couldn't decide which way to go.

"You'll learn the hand," she said, not looking up. "Nobody trusts a signature that stays still."

She showed me how to start at the centre and let the pen run out in two spirals, one above and one below, then close it with a long cross-stroke that carried the whole thing across the page. It took me all evening. My loops came out lopsided, and she made me do it again until the ink ran smooth.

Rook's summons was a debt, it turned out, and she paid it off herself the next spring, with the snow gone and the pass open. When I went back up with the mule, the ledger was on the shelf, and beneath her last entry was my own first signature, the flourish shaking but whole, and the word she'd written beside it: received.
