Spiral and loop symbol on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black symbol made of two spirals joined by a horizontal infinity loop sits on the inner wrist. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is a dark grey-black against the skin. The tattoo is centred in a close, straight-on shot with a cluttered, dimly lit workspace behind the raised hand.

Sit down, sit down, the soup will keep and so will the bride's mother if you make her wait. You'll want the old story of Mabel Quayle and Ezra Oddie, the two cord-makers of Hollin Lane, who never agreed about anything except the rope.

They worked from opposite ends of the lane, each walking backwards as they twisted hemp, so that the cord ran out from their hands like two spirals unwinding toward the same middle. Every year at the lane fair they met where the lines crossed and argued over the knot that joined them. Ezra wanted it pulled tight, a clean run of a loop with no slack in it. Mabel wanted it left to breathe, so the cord could turn back on itself and still hold. They argued for forty years and never once tied the thing the same way twice.
Then came the winter the bridge washed out at Stennick Ford, and the only thing left to get the ferry across was a length of rope that was half Ezra's and half Mabel's. His side had frayed in the frost. She had spare coil in her cart, wrapped in oilcloth, and she walked it down to the water through the sleet without telling him she was coming. When she tied it on, she made the loop tight on his end and loose on hers, and it held the ferry through the thaw. He never asked her why she had kept spare rope all those years. She never told him he could have asked.
That knot is still on the wall of the Drover's Rest, two spirals and a loop, hung on a nail above the bar. Nobody has ever been able to say whether it was tied tight or loose, and the landlord says that is the only argument they ever settled.
