Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A single infinity symbol is drawn in black ink, with its right loop finishing in small curled scrolls. The outline varies in weight, with heavier strokes on the loops and finer lines in the scrolls. The tattoo sits centrally in the frame against pale skin, with a skin fold visible at the top right.

Frost had kept the gate shut since Tuesday, and Ivy Harker had been working the hinge with a tin of paraffin and a flat bar for most of the morning. The pin had rusted into its sleeve so thoroughly that it came out only with a shriek, and she stood back with her breath clouding, the bar hanging from one hand, looking at the figure of eight that forty years of swinging had worn into the mud of the yard.

Her grandfather had called that shape the Sunday loop. He drove the ewes round it every dawn, out through the gate, along the hedge, back past the barn and out again, never once taking the same line twice in the same mud. He said a loop was only a loop if you could not find the join, and that the real trick was the curls at the end, where the path turned sharp and you had to lean into the bend to keep your feet.
The light was already thinning over the top field, and the dog lay under the trailer with his nose on his paws, plainly unimpressed by her plans. Ivy wiped the pin clean, worked grease into the sleeve with her thumb, and swung the gate. It moved without a sound, and she laughed out loud in the empty yard, a small cold sound that rose and was gone.
She went to fetch the ewes the long way, round the hedge, through the gate and back past the barn, and at the bend where the path curled she leaned into it the way he had shown her, and did not look down at her feet.
